Living With Uncertainty

Share

I am back from Europe where I was tested, transformed, informed, wooed, wowed and whatever else.

I consider the Psychic Newsletter subscribers a loving soul group so I’m going to risk imperfectly sharing. (In other words, it may sound like I have ADD.) I can write more descriptive articles on selected topics later.

The theme of The Jung in Ireland Conference was The Wanderer. We gathered in Galway at a former 18th Century Manor House now a 5-Star hotel called Glenlo Abbey. Surrounded by green fields, most of it a golf course, we could easily walk the short distance to see the ducks in the nearby lake–or head down the road to the local pub.

Hotel service was stellar, but the distribution of rooms was odd. Some guest rooms were more like suites, while my assigned roommate and I were in quarters where the beds were so close we could have held hands. (She hates when I say that!)

At the group introductions, we each spoke our intentions for the seminar. Mine was to explore what it means to live with uncertainty.

Among other things, I was contemplating my unfinished article on our current astrological situation (for the next 13 years) of Pluto in Capricorn; (the quintessential time of living in earth and social changes. Unless, as money-magnate coach Morgana Ray sardonically observed, the world ends in 2012; then we won’t have to worry about it.)

Living with Uncertainty seems particularly pertinent, especially in my line of work. People often seek readings, or even to become more psychic, so they can avoid uncertainty and “mistakes.” But that’s not possible, no matter how much you know.

Renowned medical intuitive, Caroline Myss, says intuition offers us direction. Direction is fluid, she says, while answers are dead.

And so often we want answers. What’s going to happen? Am I going to get what I want? Which path should I take?

Sometimes in readings clients (especially more analytical thinkers) ask me, “Is it going to be this choice or that?” And it’s going to be neither; in fact, it may even be out of the realm of their current thinking. Try describing that!

In Jungian terms, the concept of wandering, (being thrown outside of what you already know) is an essential aspect of our existence. If we don’t willingly go beyond our constructs, the Universe will likely catapult us there.

And here’s another facet that draws me to study Jung’s ideas. Therapy for Jung was a proactive stance, rather than simply a cure for illness. Our inner life is as important as the outer. In fact, Jung believed that our inner life, unexplored, will show up as fate.

Transform from within and you transform your world, and the world around you. Stay static in old, unexamined ideas, and you’re likely to hit up against a mid-life crisis.

And if, for instance, you get sick, how will you meet it? Will you expand your mind and use the event to grow? Can you see pain as a vehicle to break down rigidity so that the unconscious may become known?

In Jung’s cosmology, we learn to hold the space (the tension) between opposites. For instance, we waver, in our lives, between exile and return, between wandering and home.

Wandering (whether we’re cast out because of an illness, loss of fortune, inner calling, even a business trip) allows us to break away from our structured identities, and as analyst John Hill remarked, “reconstitute ourselves as artistically whole.”

I was also re-introduced to Homer’s Odyssey (a running thread through the conference). The surprise in that saga is that after all his wild adventures, all Odysseus wants is to come home and bounce his grandson on his knee.

Stay tuned for Parts II & III–Embracing Rome, re-thinking time– and the Psychic Adventure of Paris!

A bientot! 🙂
